Flu Outbreak Impacts BloodSource Blood Collections
Mather, CA –BloodSource announced today that cold and flu season – including respiratory illnesses and H1N1 – are impacting blood collections in Northern and Central California. BloodSource is requesting that healthy and eligible blood donors donate blood today or in the very near future. BloodSource provides blood and services to over 40 hospitals in a 26-county region.
Christopher Gresens, M.D., BloodSource Senior Medical Officer and VP Global Medicine, remarks, “Local cases of influenza and other upper respiratory tract infections have increased in numbers so rapidly during the past several weeks that we have seen a substantial negative impact on blood donors. As a result, we recently have found it especially difficult to collect sufficient quantities of blood for the patients we serve. That’s why we ask all healthy individuals who can donate blood to donate now.”
Sacramento County has been especially inundated with patients reporting flu symptoms, according to Dr. Olivia Kasirye, Sacramento County Public Health Officer. “This flu season has been particularly hard-hitting. We echo the request of BloodSource for healthy and eligible blood donors to donate today. It is critically important to have an adequate blood supply to meet patient needs.”
The need for blood is constant: patients in cancer treatment, receiving heart surgeries, injured in traumatic accidents, or recovering from burns need blood. BloodSource asks blood donors to donate what they can give and what is needed today. Please call 866.822.5663 or visit bloodsource.org today to make an appointment to donate blood or to learn more about eligibility for different types of blood donation – whole blood (red cells), platelets or plasma.
