SMUD Headquarters

Historic Building Is Now a Modern Workplace

Award-winning renovation results in modern and vibrant office

The iconic SMUD headquarters is a classic example of modernist architecture and is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Inside, the 60-year-old structure was functionally obsolete. The complete revitalization focused on keeping the historical integrity of the building while providing SMUD’s employees and customers a modern and vibrant office. The project earned numerous awards including the California Preservation Foundation’s design award for rehabilitation in 2020. The remodeled building also earned LEED Gold status.

The project included:
• Complete interior demolition and abatement
• A new fifth story
• All new systems
• Buildout of modern office
• Refreshed historic exterior mural
• Seismic / structural improvements
