SMUD Station G

Coordinating a Massive Cantilevered Gate System

Numerous Challenges Had to Be Overcome in Substation Security Project

Roebbelen’s Perimeter Security team successfully overcame numerous challenges in designing, fabricating, and installing one of the largest on-site cantilevered gate systems in Northern California at a SMUD substation. The 18’ x 40’ opening includes a 2’ slope, and weight was a major issue as the only gate operator that could be used had a 30,000-pound weight limit.

The team worked with the fabrication company to complete the initial design, an engineering firm completed a detailed analysis including pending wind loads, and the team developed a plan for fabrication and field installation.

The project included:
• 14-ton gate built in four sections. Gate size 22’ tall x 70’ long
• Installation of prefabricated and pre-assembled gate sections
• 864-pound wheel assemblies installed
• Mechanical gate skirt
• Access controls
